Eat a peach

Every few years I kick myself in the ass and do something new. The last big change for me was in 2006 when I started writing this blog…huge life improvement. This year I quit my part-time job, spent the summer freelance writing and found out that I’m not into whoring my skills for little money…big money, sure. Now I’m working a interesting full-time job. This week I started going to the gym during my lunch break and again, a huge improvement…I have sooo much more energy. I bet you’re thinking…well Vanessa if you’ve got so much energy then where the heck are the recipes, where’s the food?
Honestly I haven’t been very inspired as of late. Fresh fruit, a big salad for lunch, and a family friendly meal in the evening has been the pattern for the past few weeks. I shop the farmers’ market where I collect apples and cucumbers and tomatoes (mine didn’t do so well this year), and I look at yet another bag of green beans from our CSA and I actually give up, I can’t deal with more beans. In CSA lore this will definitely be the year of the green bean. I ate some of the pickled beans and they are perfect, crisp flavorful, and tart.
I’ve also been incredibly pissed off. Sarah Palin really pisses me off and I’m sickened by her apparent lack of intelligence and lack of relevant experience. I’m pissed off that we may get a president that is worse than Bush…and that concept blows my mind. I’m incredibly pissed off that people think she’s qualified and that she has somehow improved the lot of women as a whole…give me a fracking break$@#@#!! McCain would have chosen a chimp if he thought it would help him win the election. These are depressing times and frankly I’ve been either hunkered down with a book or mindlessly watching DVDs.
At least we still have peaches, big, ripe, juicy, organic peaches with the taste and texture of the peaches of my youth. Simple honest food for these trying, lying times. There are 44 days left until the election.
This rant brought to you by a concerned citizen for Obama.

i just love you vanessa! :-) i couldn’t have expressed it better myself. i am so….so scared about the possibliity of sarah palin and john mccain actually making it to the white house. t & i have also been saying that we never would have imagined that we could get some one worse than bush in the white house… now i’m just not sure. like i said - i’m really scared for the future of our nation. on the other hand, i freaking love me some peaches! ;-)
I just had a gorgeous fresh peach 5 minutes before I read this! What a nice breakfast.
Peaches like that would certainly perk anyone up! There is a nice dessert peach soup in my No Croutons Required line-up, that you should try. It was made by Chow Vegan and it would be fabulous with juicy sweet peaches like that. The last peaches I had here in Scotland were a bit dried up and tastless, sigh.
Good for you going to the gym at lunchtime!
Vanessa, dahling…
This is my 1st time commenting, even though you’re in my reader. I felt like your post was speaking to me directly. Blogging has changed my life, I quit my job to become a writer and that has flopped :( and I have 3 jobs to support me…to make up for the ONE I used to have. I want to leave the country if we don’t get Obama as president. I can’t take it anymore. I’m tired of being embarrassed to be an American. I’m pissed at that %#@!+! John McCain, too. I haven’t felt incredibly inspired in the kitchen, and your peaches look awesome. Juicy and pretty. I smoked some peaches a few weeks ago. They came out warm, smoky and full of flavor. Ohhh, sweet peaches….
I’m with you, Vanessa! Thanks for stating the obvious. I hope everyone gets it!
Love this post. I too am enjoying the peaches (this year’s are better! We’re eating them instead of having to make jam), am overwhelmed by yet another bag of green beans (at least the girls like them too, so we have been freezing them to eat in the winter) and you know my politics…I would just like to say, please don’t insult the chimpanzees–they probably accept evolution.
Oh dear. I just got some of the juiciest peaches from my CSA and they were a winner.
Sorry about ms palin too, she does my head in. And then doubly does my head in because I cant vote. I had a really fun weekend in Boulder, CO and it was wonderful to see all the obama posters, and its good to see that we’re back to 50/50 but still scary as anything to imagine that woman getting near the whitehouse.
Right there with you on the rant. Also, can I just say that I love that you use the word “frack”?
Vanessa- I made my first voyage into the wonderful world of canning with 12 pounds of peaches that I could not resist from the farmers market- I remembered as a child those beautiful jars of peach slices with a honey syrup and a stick of cinnamon and cloves that my grandmother made. Now, I’m going back 45 years or so! Being the analytical type I bought the official “Ball” canning book and the exact recipe was in there! Whohoo!
Made a big mess in the kitchen- more so because I did not know how to really set up for this- but I now have 6 jars of liquid gold that, on a cold January day, will be a real treasure!
I’ve since made pickled asparagus, salsa (heavy on the cilantro) and tomorrow I have to do something with those 2 large sacks of pears on the back stoop!
(and I pickled the ton of beans that I got) (besides putting them up in the freezer!)

Vanessa - I always check your blog out and I had to comment on your Palin rant.. Your Palin comments sound like you are inside of my brain. I am one pissed off Democrat. I am tired of the lowest common demoninator in our society having the voting power to decide who runs our country. SICK OF IT.
Thanks for the post and for all the good recipes -
Cheers -
Vanessa!

Foodies gone political!
Thank you for your post. I’ve had a black cloud hanging over me since the Palin announcement. This latest round of Wall Street bailouts didn’t help. CEOs are walking out with millions and the current administration seems unwilling to accept any oversight!
Go Geeks. Let’s get the word out. Get out and vote.
And in the meantime, let’s eat peaches.
And spare a thought for us in the rest of the world - your government affects us enormously and we don’t get to vote.
The thought of someone with as few clues as that Palin woman has, getting the power she may get, makes my blood run cold.
