Stonehenge, Bath, and Avebury

Monday we got up early, tubed to Heathrow and rented a car. We wisely upgraded to an automatic with a GPS system. Whew…it’s a good thing we did or we’d still be trying to find our way out of Heathrow. It was quite a treat though as they gave us a Mercedes sedan…huge, luxurious, and safe…trust me when I say that there is a huge learning curve when one is forced to drive on the opposite side of the road. GH did a great job and the GPS (we named her Sheila) made sure we found our destinations.

Stonehenge was really cool. It is on a wind-swept plain with roadways off in the near distance. Next we drove to Bath. A picturesque town with tons of tourist shops, the baths, and a beautiful quality of light. On to Avebury which was my favorite stop of the day. The henges at Avebury are much older than Stonehenge. The are also larger and not hewn into shape…just rough. There are so many of them and they cover such a large area. Very cool and interesting.

Last night we had a enormously satisfying meal in a Belgium brasserie complete with the perfect frites and Belgium biers. Today it is a sunny day with temps expected to get in the 60’s so we are off to conquer the Tower of London.

Cheers!

Can you believe that in the 26 years I’ve lived here I’ve never been to Bath? It looks beautiful. Then again you made London look pretty, so I’ll reserve judgement until I see it myself. ;)

Despite being on holiday, you seem to be churning out posts faster than the rest of the food blogging world put together! How are you managing it?!

Tigerfish, I loved Avebury…my favorite stop of the day and a definite highlight of the whole trip.
