Cake vs. Pie

chocolate cake

I am so clearly a pie person. Actually in our family we are three pie to one cake. But it isn’t exactly pie season and I’m out of frozen pie fruit so I thought I’d swing the other way for a change. I’ll never make an elaborate three layer cake with fillings and icing but I’m adept at simple cakes. As I was making this cake I realized that it evokes much of the same peace-of-mind that chopping veg does… it’s a methodical pattern of work towards a satisfying end. I think that is true for most cooking…at least for me.

I wonder if the cake vs. pie debate has correlations in the Myers Brigg personality Assessment? Cake people might be rationalists or guardians and pie people might be idealists or artisans? I think personality tests blow goats…but that’s just my opinion.

My opinion of this cake…meah…not bad…for a cake. So what’s your opinion?.

Funny, Kate asked this question not too long ago. I can’t answer it because it depends far too much on the cake and the pie. Apple pie will beat chocolate cake, but carrot cake will beat pumpkin pie. I pick cheesecake…which is actually a custard. I guess I’m a traitor too, heh.

I’ve got to go with cake. I’m really not a big fan of American styled pies. A good French tart, sure, but pie just doesn’t do it for me.

I enjoy going through the fuss to make the cakes, the fillings, and the frostings; it’s like building. As strange as it may sound, I’m a sucker for ‘pretty things’. Pies, in my opinion, just aren’t pretty enough :)

In general, I’m a cake person, but a fudgy one. I just made a lime, ginger, mango meringue pie though, and it rivals any cakes I’ve ever made.

For me, it’s pies all the way. Pies remind me of home and the holidays. Plus, I don’t like super sweet desserts, which cakes too often are. Apple pie, pumpkin pie, rhubarb pie, cow pies…ok, maybe not the last one.

Blackberry and Apple pie has to be my all time favourite pudding (with custard of course) but I still voted for cake…

Pie. I have a very strong memory with the Sweet Stuff. No matter if it’s homemade, storebought, expensive or cheap, it always takes me back to my 20’s and eating pie at Denny’s at 2AM-God! That was so fun! The only cake that beats it is that really sugary kids birthday cake-love that horrible stuff! My all time fave pie is the Banana Cream at Emeril’s. If anyone ever gets a chance, go for it!!!

If someone hadn’t offfered to make my wedding cake, I would have opted for a trifle instead. Cake is usually too dry. And chocolate cake is never chocolatey enough unless it’s flourless and then is it really a cake anymore?
